Palestinian Melkite becomes first Israeli citizen named a bishop

Jerusalem, Feb. 09 (CWNews.com) - The Melkite Catholic Synod has named Father Elias Chacour, an Israeli Palestinian, to be the next Archbishop of Galilee.

Archbishop-elect Chacour, who currently heads Mar Elias Educational Institutions in Ibillin, a town in Gailliee, is the first Israeli citizen ever to be selected as a Catholic bishop.

Known for his efforts to promote friendship between Arabs and Jews, the new archbishop has twice been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. He acknowledged to the Israeli publication Haaretz that he was taking over the Melkite archdiocese at a "fairly difficult time for relations between Jews, Arabs, and Muslims." But in a separate comment to the Jerusalem Post he said: "I hope to be a moderating voice in the conflict that has spilled too much blood."

The Melkite Catholic Archdiocese of Jerusalem extends over all of Israel and the Palestinian territories. Archbishop-elect Chacour will also be the first Hebrew-speaking leader for the archdiocese, which serves about 55,000 Eastern Catholics.

O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
