The word "Greek" refers to the Greek language and culture brought to the Middle East by Alexander the Great. HistoryAt the time of Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ, Greek was the spoken and written language in the major cities of the Middle East and of well educated people. Greek was spoken mainly in the cities and centers of learning, while the local languages, such as Aramaic or Syriac, were used in the countryside. The New Testament was written in Greek, with the exception of the original Gospel of Matthew. Also, the writings of the most important Church Fathers were composed in Greek. The Liturgical Services of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church were in Greek. Then, there was the Arab-Islamic conquest of the area. A result was that the language changed to Arabic. Experts disagreed when the language changed in specific areas. The Liturgical Services of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church were translated into Arabic. Also, the Greek Liturgical Services are still used. TodayToday, the main languages of the Liturgical Services of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church are Greek and Arabic. In the United States, the languages of the Liturgical Services are Arabic, Greek, English, and Spanish.
