His Excellency / Archbishop / Sayedna / Sayidna / Joseph (Youssef) Tawil, Eparch of Newton fell asleep in the Lord hoping for the Resurrection to eternal life on February 17, 1999. On December 25, 1913, Archbishop Joseph (Youssef) Tawil was born in Damascus, Syria. He studied for the priesthood under the White Fathers. On July 20, 1936, Archbishop Joseph was ordained a priest . Then, he taught at the Patriarchal College in Alexandria, Egypt for seven years. In 1943, he became the President of the College, a position he held for eleven years. Then, he was appointed Patriarchal Vicar in Alexandria. In 1960 he was consecrated a bishop and served as Patriarchal Vicar in Damascus. While in this office, he attended Vatican Council II. On October 30, 1969, Archbishop Joseph (Youssef) Tawil was appointed Apostolic Exarch for the United States by Pope Paul VI. He was installed on the following March 15. He succeeded Bishop Justin Najmy, the first Melkite bishop in the United States. Bishop Najmy had died only two years after his installation.
In 1989, Archbishop Joseph (Youssef) Tawil resigned because he had reached the canonical age for retirement, 75. On Dec. 12, 1989, Archbishop Joseph (Youssef) Tawil became Eparch Emeritus at the age of 76.
