This description is basically for clergy of the Greek usage, not the Slavic usage, which has some variations. Clergy may wear cassock (the under-robe) all the time. In the West, most wear trousers and a clergy shirt (with the distinctive white collar all around or the Roman collar that just shows a bit of white at the throat) when in public, especially on ministry or church business. Often, around the house or when not "on-duty" clergy wear ordinary clothing. The rason, or flowing robe with wide sleeves, is what is called "choir dress"; that is, for liturgical occasions in church and formal church functions. All Byzantine clergy may wear a hat, called in Greek a kamelavkion, which is made of stiffened material (such as wool) and stands about 6 or 7 inches tall. It has a small protruding brim at the top (not around the base that sits on the head). Usually, those who wear it wear it only in church or on official occasions. Those who are monks or have the title archimandrite or bishop wear a flowing black cloth or veil around the sides and back of the hat. The veil reaches down almost to the waist in back. Clergy may on less formal or official occasions wear a soft cylindrical brimless hat about 5 or 6 inches tall, called a skoufos. Most clergy wear these robes and hats in black. Clergy who are not monks may have their robes in other colors, most usually grey or navy blue; sometimes white or other colors.
