Just Prior to Receiving the Holy Eucharist

The door of the Ikonostatis opens. The priest carrying the chalice and pattern walks to the door. He lifts up the chalice.

The priest says, " Approach with the fear of God, with faith and with love."

"Fear of God" means tremendous reverence for God's Mystical Presence and His intimate communion with us.
"With faith" means that we truly believe that this IS the Body and Blood of the risen Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ.
"With love" means that we are at peace (not in the state of moral sin) and have been reconciled with our brothers and sisters.

The people respond:
" Amen, Amen. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! The Lord is God and He has appeared to us!"
" Ameen, Ameen. Mubarakun al-ati bism-ir-Rub. Ar-Rubbu Huwallah wa qad zahara lana."

Receiving the Holy Eucharist

The priest says these words when he administers Holy Communion.
The (servant or handmaiden) of God (name) receives the Body and Blood of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of (his/her) sins and eternal life. Amen.

The name of the person receiving Holy Communion is stated by the priest/Abouna.

  • If a man named Fadi is receiving Holy Communion, the priest states “The servant of God Fadi receives the Body and Blood of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of his sins and eternal life. Amen.
  • If a woman named Mariam is receiving Holy Communion, the priest states “The handmaiden of God Mariam receives the Body and Blood of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of her sins and eternal life. Amen.

The People sing during the time period when the priest giving the Holy Eucharist to the people

Make me this day a sharer in your Mystical Supper, O Son of God.
For I will not reveal your myst'ries to your enemies,
nor will I give You a kiss like Judas,
but like the thief I acknowledge You:
remember me, O Lord;
remember me, O Holy One;
remember me, O my God,
when You come into your kingdom.

or

Recieve me now, O Son of God, as a participant in your Mystical Supper.
For I will not reveal your mystry to your enemies,
nor will I give You a kiss like Judas,
but like the thief I confess You:
remember me, O Lord; in your kingdom.

O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
