Kontakion, Troparion, Exapostilarion, and Vespers Sticheron or Doxastikon - Other days - March to August

These are short poetic hymns that present the theme of the day. On Sundays, the troparia are hymns praising the Resurrection. There are eight resurrectional troparia corresponding to the eight modes of Greek chant used in our church.

There are also troparia and kondakia for each day of the calendar year. On major feast days. the troparia extol the mystery celebrated on that particular feast. On saint days. the troparia ask the saints to intercede for the people of God.

March

25 MARCH - ANNUNCIATION
TROPARION (TONE 4)
Today is the beginning of our salvation and the revelation of the Mystery that has been planned from all eternity: the Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announces this grace. Let us join him in crying out to the Mother of God "Hail, O full of grace, the Lord is with you!"

April

23 April - Holy Great-Martyr George the Triumphant
Troparion (TONE 4)
O Great Among the Saints and Glorious Martyr George, since you are a deliverer of captives and a defender of the poor, a doctor for the sick and a noble attendant to kings: intercede with Christ God, that He may save our souls.

25 April - Holy Apostle Mark the Evangelist
Troparion (Tone 3)
Holy Apostle Mark the Evangelist, intercede with God all-merciful that He may grant us the remission of our sins.

May

2 May - Athanasios the Great, Archbishop of Alexandria
Troparion (TONE 3)
Holy Pontiff Athanasius, you became a stronghold of Orthodoxy, strengthening the Church through your divine teachings. Opposing the heretical opinion of Arius, you explaned and taught that the Son is equal in nature with the Father. O Holy Father, intercede with Christ God that He may grant us abundant mercy.

21 May - The Holy and Glorious Sovereign, the Equal of the Apostles Helena
Kontarion (TONE 3)
Today Constantine and Helena his mother expose to our veneration the Cross, the awesome Cross of Christ, a great sign of salvation to the Jews and a standard of victory: a great symbol of conquest and triumph.

25 MAY - THIRD DISCOVERY OF THE HEAD OF FORERUNNER AND PROPHET JOHN THE BAPTIST

TROPARION (TONE 4)
O Prophet and Forerunner, it is Christ who revealed to us a divine treasure: your head that was hidden in the ground. On the occasion of this discovery, we gather to sing inspired hymns of praise to the Saviour who, through your intercession, delivered us all from corruption.

KONTAKION (TONE 4)
O Forerunner, by giving your venerable head to the sinful woman, Herod broke the Law of God. As for us, at the sight of this head, we cry out for joy and say: "Pray to the Lord that He may grant mercy to us all."

June

9 JUNE - Kyrollos OF ALEXANDRIA
KONTAKION (TONE 4)
O Kyrollos, through the power you received from Christ, you answered the questions of heretics and enriched the Church with your sublime doctrine, weeding out the errors of Nestorius. Wherefore, O blessed one, you now stand with the choirs of angels before God, incessantly interceding that He may grant forgiveness of sins to all.

16 JUNE - TYKHON THE WONDERWORKER (TONE 3)
KONTAKION (TONE 3)
O Holy One, you became an example of the hermit's life highly pleasing to God; wherefore you obtained from the Spirit Paraclete on high the power to destroy the idols of error, to save peoples, to cast out devils, and to heal the sick. Holy Tykhon, we honor you as beloved of God.

24 JUNE - NATIVITY OF FORERUNNER AND PROPHET JOHN THE BAPTIST

TROPARION (TONE 4)
O Prophet and Forerunner of the coming of Christ, in spite of our eagerness to render you due honor, we fall short when singing your praise. Your glorious birth saved your mother from the shame of barrenness, returned to your father the power of speech, and proclaimed to the world the Incarnation of the Son of God.

KONTAKION (TONE 3)
The woman who had been barren becomes fertile and gives birth today to the Forerunner of Christ. He is the greatest and last of the prophets, for standing in the waters of the Jordon River, he placed his hands on Christ whom all the prophets had announced, and in so doing he became a prophet himself, a preacher and a forerunner of the Word of God.

29 JUNE - TROPARION OF THE HOLY, GLORIOUS AND ILLUSTRIOUS PRINCES OF THE APOSTLES PETER AND PAUL (TONE 2)
O Peter and Paul, higher in rank than any other apostle, doctors of the world, intercede with the Master of All that He may give peace to the world and great mercy to us all.

30 JUNE - KONTAKION OF THE TWELVE APOSTLES (TONE 2)
Today Christ the Rock glorifies with supreme honor the Rock of Faith and Leader of the Apostles, together with Paul and the company of the Twelve, whose memory we celebrate with eager faith, giving glory to the One who gave glory to them.

July

1 JULY - HOLY WONDERWORKERS COSMAS AND DAMIAN
KONTAKION (TONE 2)
O glorious Physicians and Wonderworkers who have received the power of healing, extend it upon those in need. In your kindness to us, hold down our enemies' pride and heal the world through your miracles.

6 JULY - ST SISOES THE GREAT
KONTAKION (TONE 4)
You retired to the wilderness and became like an angel in the flesh, O holy Sisoes! Because of your spiritual teachings, you are a shining guide to the faithful. We glorify you fervently.

7 JULY - THE HOLY GREAT-MARTYR KYRIAKA
KONTAKION (TONE 2)
The martyr of Christ Kyriaka has called us now to celebrate her struggles and to sing a hymn of praise to her godly courage. She has mastered her imagination and energetically conquered her body's desires.

8 JULY - HOLY GREAT-MARTYR PROCOPIOS
KONTAKION (TONE 2)
O Procopios, you were burning with divine zeal for Christ: you assumed the power of the Cross as your shield and thus broke down the enemy's pride and his power, upholding the glory of the Church while growing in faith and giving us all an example to follow.

Between July 13 and July 19 - Fathers of the First Six Ecumenical Councils, A Sunday after Pentecost

TROPARION (TONE 8)
O Christ our God, You are infinitely glorified, for You have established our Holy Fathers as radiant stars on earth, and through them You have guided us all to the True Faith. Most Merciful One, glory to You!.

KONTAKION (TONE 8)
The preaching of the Apostles and the teachings of the Fathers established in the Church a single and unified faith. Wherefore this Church, robed in the truth of theology inspired by heaven, explains and declares with certitude the great mystery of Christ.

VESPERS STICHERON (TONE 6)
The Fathers of the Councils proclaim to us today that the eternal Trinity is One God and One Lord, explaining to us that it is of one nature, consubstantial, of one will and one act, not divided or shared, existing in the simplicity of God's being; and defining that this will & act of God have no beginning and will never have an end. Wherefore we the faithful glorify these Fathers as Equals of the Apostles, for they taught all humanity the true doctrine of God.

19 JULY - OUR VENERABLE MOTHER MACRINA

TROPARION (TONE 8)
In you, O mother Macrina, the faithful image of God shone forth, for you carried your cross and followed Christ. You taught by your deeds how to spurn the body, for it passes away, and how to value the soul, for it is immortal. Wherefore, your soul is forever in happiness with the Angels.

KONTAKION (TONE 4)
Since the light of holiness shone radianatly in you, you were an example of the life of piety for all, teaching virtures to those awho cry aloud: "Hail, Macrina, glory of virgins".

20 JULY - HOLY PROPHET ELIAS THE THESBITE

TROPARION (TONE 4)
The glorious Elias, the angel in body, the pillar of the prophets and second forerunner of the coming of Christ and, by sending grace from on high upon Elisha, dispels diseases, cleanes lepers, and oveflows with healing for those who honor him.

KONTAKION (TONE 4)
O glorious Prophet Elias who foresaw the glories of God, by your command you withheld the rains from heaven: intercede for our sake with the only One who loves mankind!

22 JULY - ST MARY MAGDALENE
KONTAKION (TONE 3)
Let us all sing a hymn of praise and a special canticle to the Disciple of Christ, Mary Magdalene, the first myrrh-bearing woman, for she was a messenger of joy to the Disciples. Let us praise the God of All who lavished upon us and upon the world such a fountain of wonders and miracles.

25 JULY - DORMITION OF HOLY ANNE, THE MOTHER OF THE THEOTOKOS
TROPARION (TONE 4)
O divinely wise Anne, you carried in your womb the Mother of God, the Immaculate One who gave life to Life. Wherefore you now have been carried up joyfully to the inheritance of heaven, the abode of those who rejoice in glory. O ever-blessed one, you seek the forgiveness of sins for those who honor you with fervor.

27 JULY - ST PANTELEIMON
KONTAKION (TONE 5) You emulated God's mercy, and He granted you the power of healing, O Panteleimon, victorious martyr of Christ! Heal our spiritual diseases through your intercession, and as we constantly cry out to the Lord, "Save us!" take away the temptations that the Enemy always places before our steps.

August

1 AUGUST - Procession of the Holy Cross
KONTAKION (TONE 4)
Christ our God, who chose by your free volition to be elevated upon the Holy Cross, grant your mercies to your new people who are called by your name. In your power gladden the hearts of our public authorities. Strengthen them in every good deed so that your true alliance may be for them a weapon of peace and a standard of victory.

5 AUGUST - PREPARATION OF THE TRANSFIGURATION (TONE 4)
KONTAKION (TONE 4)
Today the whole human race prepares to reflect the radiance of divine splendor brought about in the Transfiguration of Christ, and to cry out with joy: "Christ is transfigured to save us all!"

6 AUGUST - TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD, G0D AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST

KONTAKION (TONE 7)
On the mountain You were transfigured, O Christ our God, and your Disciples saw as much of your glory as they could hold, so that when they should see You crucified, they would know that You suffered willingly, and would proclaim to the world that You are truly the Splendor of the Father.

TROPARION (TONE 7)
You were transfigured on the mountain, O Christ God, showing your Disciples as much of your glory as they could hold. Let your eternal light shine also upon us sinners, through the prayers of the Mother of God. O Giver of Light, glory to You.

15 AUGUST - DORMITION OF THE THEOTOKOS

TROPARION (TONE 1)
In giving birth you have preserved your virginity, and in falling asleep you did not forsake the world, O Mother of God. You have passed to life, being the Mother of Life. Through your intercession, save our souls from death.

KONTAKION (TONE 2)
Neither death nor the tomb could hold the Mother of God, our watchful Protectress and our unfailing hope. Since she is the Mother of Life, Christ who dwelt in her ever-virginal womb lifted her up to the eternal life.

HIRMOS (TONE 1)
"All human generations bless you, O Mother of God. The laws of nature were overcome in you, O Pure Virgin: for your birth-giving left you a virgin, and your death became the herald of your life. O you who remained virgin after giving birth, and alive after having died, O Mother of God, deign always to save your inheritance."

PRAYER BEFORE THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL
Shine in our hearts, Master who love all people, the pure light of your divine knowledge and open the eyes of our minds that we may understand the announcing of your Good News; set in us the fear of your blessed commandments, so that, trampling all carnal desires, we may begin to live according to the spirit, both willing and doing everything to please You. For You are the light of our souls and bodies, Christ God, and we render glory to You and to your eternal Father and to your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

25 AUGUST - THE APOSTLE TITUS KONTAKION (TONE 2)
O Titus, worthy of all praise, preacher of Christ's mysteries, you became the companion of Paul, with whom you taught us the doctrine of God. Wherefore we cry out to you: "Never cease to intercede for the sake of us all!"

29 AUGUST - BEHEADING OF FORERUNNER AND PROPHET JOHN THE BAPTIST

TROPARION (TONE 2)
The memory of the just is recalled with praise. As for you, O Forerunner, the Lord's witness is enough: indeed, you were greater than the prophets since you were found worthy to baptize in the waters the One they could only announce. You have fought for the sake of truth and proclaimed to those in Hades that God who ap-peared in the flesh has taken away the sins of the world and bestowed His great mercy on us.

KONTAKION (TONE 3)
The beheading of the Forerunner was an act of divine providence: the occasion for him to announce the coming of the Saviour to the souls in Hades. Let then Herodias lament and weep, for she has asked for murder, prefering the present life and its pleasures to eternal life and God's law.
