Holy and Glorious Great-Martyr Demetrios / Demetrius, the Myroblite

Holy and Glorious Great-Martyr Demetrios / Demetrius, the Myroblite, is a soldier saint. He encourged Holy Martyr Nestor to fight and kill Lyaios.

Biography

26 October - Holy and Glorious Great-Martyr Demetrios, the Myroblite, was put to death with his companion Holy Martyr Nestor, whose feast-day is 27 October.

Early in the 4th Century, in Thessalonika, the Emperor Maximinian was attending the public gladiatorial games. During a game, the Emperor's favorite gladiator, a barbarian named Lyaios, challenged / provoked everyone in the city to fight to the death. Holy and Glorious Great-Martyr Demetrios, the Myroblite, prayed. Encouraged by Holy and Glorious Great-Martyr Demetrios, Holy Martyr Nestor fought and killed Lyaios in public combat in the coliseum. Enraged, the Emperor ordered both Holy and Glorious Great-Martyr Demetrios and Holy Martyr Nestor , who were Christians, to be executed in revenge for the killing of his favorite gladiator.

After his death, the body of Holy and Glorious Great-Martyr Demetrios exuded a sweet-smelling oil, called "myron" in Greek. For this reason, he is called the "Myroblite."
Many healing miracles were performed through the intercession of Holy and Glorious Great-Martyr Demetrios, the Myroblite.
Holy and Glorious Great-Martyr Demetrios, the Myroblite is venerated as a powerful and popular protector and healer.

O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
