Holy Hieromartyr Ignatios / Ignatius the God-Bearer, the Third Patriarch / Batriyark of Antioch
Holy Hieromartyr Ignatios / Ignatiusthe God-Bearer was the third Patriarch / Batriyark of Antioch and a Martyr.
Biography
20 December - Holy Hieromartyr Ignatios the God-Bearer was the third Patriarch / Batriyark of Antioch. He was Patriarch / Batriyark from 68 to 107. He may have been appointed by and or consecrated by The Holy, Glorious and Illustrious Prince of the Apostles Peter or the Holy, Glorious and Illustrious Prince of the Apostles Paul. (Theodoret ("Dial. Immutab.", I, iv, 33a, Paris, 1642) is the authority for the statement that The Holy, Glorious and Illustrious Prince of the Apostles Peter appointed the Holy Hieromartyr Ignatios to Bishop of Antioch.)
Around the year 50, Holy Hieromartyr Ignatios the God-Bearer was born in Syria.
For refusing to worship the pagan gods (idols), Emperor Trajan sentenced Holy Hieromartyr Ignatios to be put in chains and taken to Rome to become the food of wild beasts and a spectacle for the people. On the long trip to Rome, he met with many Christians and wrote several letters.
On December 20, 107, Holy Hieromartyr Ignatios the God-Bearer was torn to pieces by wild beasts in a Roman amphitheatre.
The Word "Catholic"
The first record of the word "Catholic" is its usage by Holy Hieromartyr Ignatios the God-Bearer in the letter to the Smyrnaeans.
The word "Catholic" means "universial" or "whole" or "according to the whole" or "pertaining to the whole".
The English transliteration (Anglicized) is "he katholike ekklesia".
The Latin transliteration (Latinized) is "catholica ecclesia".
kath-hol-ik-e or cat-hol-ic-a has four syllables:
"kath/kata" or "cat" = according to
"hol(os)" = (the) whole
"ik" or "ic" makes it an adjective
"e" or "a" is the feminine ending)
"ekklesia" or "ecclesia" means "church"
"he" means "the"
Name on His Letters
Holy Hieromartyr Ignatios the God-Bearer was called "the God-Bearer" because he signed his letters with that name.
Holy Hieromartyr Ignatios wrote in Greek. The Latin transliteration (Latinization) of his signature is "Theophorus".
The English transliteration (Anglicization) of his signature is "ho Theophoros".
The prefix "Theo" means "God" and the word "phorus" / "phoros" means "carrier" or "bearer". (The word "ho" means "the".) Then, Holy Hieromartyr Ignatios was the "bearer of God" or "carrier of God" or "God-Bearer".

Today the Virgin is on her way to the cave where she will give birth
to the Eternal Word of God in an ineffable manner.
Rejoice, therefore, O universe, when you hear this news, and glorify
with the angels and the shepherds Him who shall appear as a newborn Babe,
being God from all eternity.
Holy Hieromartyr Ignatios the God-Bearer
Troparion (Tone 4)
O Holy Hieromartyr Ignatios, you lent yourself to the apostles' way of life and succeded them on their throne. Inspired by God, you found the way to contemplation through practice and prayer; wherefore you became a perfect teacher of truth, fighting for the faith unto the shedding of your blood. O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants
Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no
grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for
there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and
the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your
all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
