Melkite Greek Catholic Church Information Center
Some People are not required to Fast
The Melkite Church recognizes that Holy God wants people to be healthy and to be able to
do their daily tasks. The Melkite Church recognizes the concept that "Food is fuel". Then, some people are not required to fast.
The Melkite Church recognizes that some people's bodies need:
- More nutrients and more calories than other people's bodies.
- Nutrients and calories on a regular basis throughout the day.
Please discuss Fasting with your doctor. Fasting is a medical issue which should be discussed with your doctor.
My understanding is that Fasting depends not on age, but on the health of
the person.
What does the person's doctor recommend?
- Should the person eat certain foods? Some doctors recommend eating a few of the forbidden foods and drink.
- Should the person eat at certain times? Some doctors recommend eating at certain times.
- Should the person eat at regular intervals? Some doctors recommend eating at regular intervals.
- Should the person not eat until late in the day? Some doctors recommend eating at a earlier time in the day.
- Should the person fast for a large number of days? Some doctors recommend fasting for samller number of days.
- Should the person fast every day? Some doctors recommend fasting once or twice per week.
Some of the many conditions during which people maybe should NOT fast are:
- Developing the body - Children
- Developing the body - Teenagers
- Developing the body - Women who are carrying a baby
- Maintaining the body - Elderly
- Maintaining the body - Frail
- Reparing the body - Injured
- Reparing the body - Sick
- Straining the body - Athletes
- Straining the body -Labors
- Straining the body - Travelers
- Straining the body - Women who are feeding a baby

Melkite Greek Catholic Church Information Center is
dedicated to my cousins: Bucky (Richard C. Liles), Shirley (Shirley Jean Liles Buck), and Donna (Donna Bertha Liles Campbell). Bucky fell asleep in
the Lord on Dec. 12, 2000, Shirley fell asleep in the Lord on Nov. 8, 2001, and Donna fell asleep in the Lord on March 9, 2020.
O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants
Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no
grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for
there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and
the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your
all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
