BiographyIn 295, Holy Father Athanasios the Great was born in Alexandria. He was a disciple of Holy and God-bearing Father Antony the Great. In 325, while a deacon, Holy Father Athanasios went with his bishop, Alexander of Alexandria, to the Council of Nicea. At the Council, Holy Father Athanasios refuted Arius. At the death of Alexander, Archbishop of Alexandria, Holy Father Athanasios was elevated to the See of Alexandria in 328. Through his sermons and writings, he became a defender of the faith and a champion of God. On several occasions, Holy Father Athanasios was exiled. He spent over seventeen years in exile over a 46 year period. On May 2, 373, Holy Father Athanasios died.
