Holy Week

In the Holy Mystery of Holy Crowning, a priest marries one couple of two people: one man and one woman. The man and the woman become husband and wife. The priest crowns the man and the woman as priests of the domestic church (their home) and as king and queen of their home.

Holy Mystery of Holy Crowning is an ordination for the domestic Church (their home). The husband and wife's home is their Church.
During the Divine Liturgy for Holy Mystery of Holy Crowning, a hymn is sung as the bride and groom circles the altar three times. The same hymn is sung during the Divine Liturgy for the Holy Mystery of Holy Orders as the priest candidate circles the altar three times.

Procedure

The Holy Mystery of Holy Crowning liturgical service has two parts:

  • The Betrothal Ceremony (engagement ceremony)
    • The couple promise themselves to one another.
    • The rings are exchanged.
  • The Crowning (sacrament of Marriage / Church's blessing of the marriage)
    • The couple is crowned with floral wreaths or crowns of gold. - This crowning signifies two things.
      • The Christian family, led by the husband and wife, is a unit in God's kingdom and should live under his reign.
      • This couple will attain the heavenly crowns by living their married life in a Christian manner.
    • The couple join in a procession around the marriage altar, which is set up in the middle of the church. - This procession reminds the couple that from now on they will walk through life together, with the joys of eternal life as their goal.
    • The couple share a common cup of wine. - This sharing reminds the couple that, throughout their married life, they will share all things in common, both the good and the bad.

Holy Mystery of Holy Crowning is received after the man and the woman:

O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
