TELEGRAMS: DEATHS OF CARDINAL ODDI AND PATRIARCH MAXIMOS V HAKIM

VATICAN CITY, JUN 30, 2001 (VIS) - John Paul II sent a telegram to Bishop Luciano Monari of Piacenza-Bobbio, Italy, for the death yesterday at the age of 90 of Cardinal Silvio Oddi, prefect emeritus of the Congregation for the Clergy. The Holy Father sent another telegram to His Beatitude, Gregoire III Laham, patriarch of the Greek-Melkites, Damascus, Syria, for the death yesterday at the age of 93 of His Beatitude, Maximos V Hakim, patriarch emeritus of the same patriarchate.

In the telegram to Bishop Monari, the Pope recalls "with a grateful spirit, the invaluable collaboration that (Cardinal Oddi) gave to the Holy See during so many decades in the service of five Popes; as apostolic nuncio in various countries and then as prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy."

In the second telegram, the Holy Father affirms that Patriarch Maximos V Hakim always strove to "promote unity among all the faithful, in the Middle East and in the diaspora, in the service of communion within the Church and in order to announce the Gospel to the world."

Pope's Statement

On the occasion of the death of Melkite Patriarch Emeritus Maximos V at the age of 93, Pope John Paul II stated that his great legacy is the promotion of unity among the faithful of the Greek-Melkite Church worldwide. Upon hearing the news of the death, Pope John Paul II sent a telegram to express his spiritual closeness to the community the patriarch led for more than 30 years. He sent the telegram to Patriarch Gregorios III in the See of Damascus. During his recent visit to Syria, John Paul II visited the See of the Greek-Melkite Patriarchate in Damascus. On May 7, during their meeting with the Pope, and in the presence of Gregorios III and Greek Orthodox Patriarch Ignatios IV Hazim, Syrian youth urged their pastors to make every effort to over-come the scandal of division among Christians.

O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
