The Fourth Sunday has the name "Cheese fare" because traditionally this Sunday was the last day on which products from an animal (mammals, birds, and shellfish), such as milk, eggs, butter, cheese, yogurt, etc. (these items are often called dairy products in the United States) were eaten until Holy and Glorious Pascha. These products from an animal are forbidden according to the traditional fasting rules. Then, we are "vegan".

The Fourth Sunday also has the name "Forgiveness Sunday". This Sunday has this name for two reasons. The first reason is the Gospel reading, which tells us that unless we forgive others, we should not expect God to forgive us. The second reason is because there is a Service of Forgiveness this evening during the Vespers of Clean Monday.

The Service of Forgiveness should be done during the Vespers of Clean Monday this evening. But, some parishes do the Service of Forgiveness at the end of the Divine Liturgy.

Gospel Mt. 6:14-21

In the Gospel for the Fourth Sunday of the Triodion, the Sunday of the Cheese Fare, we hear about about helping someone who is needy or sick or suffering, we are helping Our Lord God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, who is Holy God Himself. Also, the Gospel puts fasting into the correct perspective.

Kontakion, Troparion, Exapostilarion, and Vespers Sticheron or Doxastikon

KONTAKION (TONE I)
O You who guide men towards wisdom and give them intelligence and understanding, Instructor of the Ignorant and helper of the Poor : strengthen and enlighten my heart, O Lord! O Word of God, grant that I may speak, for behold I will not keep my lips from crying out to You : "O Compassionate One, have mercy on me who have fallen!"

VESPERS STICHERON (TONE 6)
Most honored Paradise, garden of beauty and delight, dwelling-place made perfect by God, unending gladness and rejoicing, delight of prophets and home of saints: by the harmony of your rustling leaves, beseech the Creator of All that He may open to me the gates I had closed by my sins, and that I may be made worthy once more to partake of the Tree of life and bliss which You had made mine from the beginning.

O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
