Gospel Lk.15:11-32
In the Gospel for the Second Sunday of the Triodion, the Sunday of the Prodigal Son, we hear about God's eagerness to forgive us
sinners when we repent.
This Gospel reminds us of our prideful sinfulness, of our need to repent, and of our Father's eagerness to forgive us.
Kontakion, Troparion, Exapostilarion, and Vespers Sticheron or Doxastikon
KONTAKION (TONE 3)
When in my wretchedness I ran away from your fatherly love. I
squandered in wickedness the riches you had given me. And so now. like
the Prodigal Son. I cry out to You: "I have sinned in your sight, O
merciful Father; receive me now that I repent and make me as one of
your hired servants."
VESPERS STICHERON (TONE 1)
Brothers and sisters, our purpose is to know the power of God's goodness:
how, when the Prodigal Son gave up sin and hastened to the parental refuge,
his kindly father welcomed him and kissed him and marked him with signs of honor.
He manifested this mystical joy to the inhabitants of heaven by killing the fatted calf
in order that we too may do what is right before the Sacrificer, the Father and Lover
of All People, and the Victim, the glorious Savior of our souls.
Fasting
- Second Sunday, Sunday of the Prodigal Son
- During the week following this Sunday, the normal routine of fasting on Wednesday and Friday resumes.
- Traditionally, the week following this Sunday is the last week during which meat from mammals and birds is eaten until Holy and Glorious Pascha.
Thirtythird Sunday after the Great Feast of Pentecost / (Sunday after) Seventeenth Week of the Great Feast of the Exaltation of the Precious and Lifegiving Cross
Every Sunday following the Sunday after the Great Feast of Exaltation of the Precious and Lifegiving Holy Cross is both a Sunday after Pentecost and a Sunday of the Holy Cross until The Tridoion.
Some theologians think the Pentecost Cycle and Holy Cross Cycle ends on the day before the First Sunday of the Tridoion: Sunday of the Pharisee and the Publican. Other theologians think that this period ends on the day before the First All Souls Saturday. The First All Souls Saturday is the day before the Third Sunday of the Triodion: Sunday of Meat fare.
Pascha Cycle
The Triodion is within the Pascha Cycle. Second Sunday of Triodion: Sunday of the Prodigal Son is the second Sunday of the Pascha Cycle. This Sunday is the ninth Sunday before Holy and Glorious Pascha.
How to determine when the Second Sunday of Triodion: Sunday of the Prodigal Sonn occurs
A count back from the date of Pascha is made.

O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants
Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no
grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for
there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and
the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your
all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
