Holy Father John the Damascene was declared a Doctor of the Universal Church by Pope Leo XIII. Holy Father John renounced his high estate to become a monk in the monastry of St. Sabas, near Jerusalem. He and his companion, St. Cosmas composed beautiful hymns and canons in honor of the Theokotos and of the saints. Holy Father John composed the "Cannon of the Resurrection", which is said during the Pascha Liturgy. Also, he championed the Faith against the Iconoclast Emperor Leo. According to legend, the Iconoclasts cut off one hand which was miraculously restored by The Theotokos.
