Gospel Lk. 18:10-14

In the Gospel for the First Sunday of the Triodion, the Sunday of the Pharisee and the Publican, we hear how the Pharisee and the Publican acted. From their example, we learn about how to pray and act. This Sunday sets the mood of humility and repentance and asking for God's mercy.

Kontakion, Troparion, Exapostilarion, and Vespers Sticheron or Doxastikon

KONTAKION (TONE 4)
Let us shun the proud attitude of the boastful Pharisee and learn humility from the Publican's sighs; let us cry out to our Savior:" Have mercy on us, O You who alone are merciful!"

VESPERS STICHERON (TONE 1)
When the Pharisee went up to the temple in his vainglory and the Publican bowed in his repentance, they both stood before You, O Master! The one lost his reward through boasting, while the other won your blessing through his sighs. Because I too am sighing in your presence, strengthen me, Christ God, for You are the Lover of all people.!

Fasting

  • First Sunday, Sunday of the Pharisee and the Publican
    • The week following this Sunday is a feast week.
    • During the week following this Sunday, no fasting is permitted. There is no fasting on Wednesday and Friday.

Thirtythird Sunday after the Great Feast of Pentecost / (Sunday after) Sixteenth Week of the Great Feast of the Exaltation of the Precious and Lifegiving Cross

Every Sunday following the Sunday after the Great Feast of Exaltation of the Precious and Lifegiving Holy Cross is both a Sunday after Pentecost and a Sunday of the Holy Cross until The Tridoion.

Some theologians think the Pentecost Cycle and Holy Cross Cycle ends on the day before the First Sunday of the Tridoion: Sunday of the Pharisee and the Publican. Other theologians think that this period ends on the day before the First All Souls Saturday. The First All Souls Saturday is the day before the Third Sunday of the Triodion: Sunday of Meat fare.

Pascha Cycle

The First Sunday of the Triodion, Pharisee and the Publican is within the Pascha Cycle. The First Sunday of the Triodion, Pharisee and the Publican begins the Holy and Glorious Pascha Cycle. This Sunday is the tenth Sunday before Holy and Glorious Pascha.

How to determine when the First Sunday of Triodion: Sunday of the Pharisee and the Publican occurs

A count back from the date of Pascha is made.

O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
