Prayer for the Sick

These Prayer for the Sick texts are from Byzantine Melkite Euchologion published by the Eparchy of Newton (Our Lady of the Annunciation (Al Bisharah)), in Roslindale, Massachusetts, United States.

Priest: Let us pray to the Lord.

Response: Lord, have mercy.

Priest: O Lord Almighty and Master of all, the Healer of souls and bodies; You who put down, and raise up, chastise and then heal: visit now in you mercy our brother (sister) (Name) who is ill. Stretch forth your unseen arm which is full of healing and health. Raise him (her) from his (her) bed and cure him (her) of his (her) illness. Cast away from him (her) the spirit of disease and of every sickness, the spirit of pain and fever; and if he (she) has sinned or transgressed, grant him (her) forgiveness and remission in your love for mankind. Yes, Lord, have pity on your creation, through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom You are blessed, together with your all-holy, good and life giving Spirit, now and always and for ever and ever. Amen.

GOSPEL FOR A SICK MAN

A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Luke the Evangelist:

At that time, the Lord Jesus called the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. He said to them, "Take nothing for the journey: neither staff, nor haversack, nor bread, nor money; and let none of you take a spare tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay there; and when you leave let it be from there. As for those who do not welcome you, when you leave their town shake the dust from your feet as a sign to them." So they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the Good News and healing everywhere.

GOSPEL FOR A SICK WOMAN

A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Mark the Evangelist:

At that time, a large crowd followed Jesus; they were pressing all round him. Now there was a woman who had suffered from a hemorrhage for twelve years; after long and painful treatment under various doctors, she had spent all she had without being any the better for it, in fact, she was getting worse. She had heard about Jesus, and she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his cloak. "If I can touch even his clothes," she had told herself, "I shall be well again." And the source of the bleeding dried up instantly, and she felt in herself that she was cured of her complaint. Immediately aware that power had gone out from him, Jesus turned round in the crowd and said, "Who touched my clothes?" His disciples said to him: "You see how the crowd is pressing round you and yet you say: 'Who touched me?'" But he continued to look all round to see who had done it. Then the woman came forward, frightened and trembling because she knew what had happened to her, and she fell at his feet and told him the whole truth. "My daughter," he said, "your faith has restored you to health; go in peace and be free from your complaint."

O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
