Prayer Over A Child On The First Day Of School

This Prayer Over A Child On The First Day Of School text isfrom Byzantine Melkite Euchologion published by the Eparchy of Newton (Our Lady of the Annunciation (Al Bisharah)), in Roslindale, Massachusetts, United States.

Priest: Let us pray to the Lord.

Response: Lord, have mercy.

Priest: O God our God, who honored man with your own image and endowed him with a free will; who entered the temple in the middle of the feast and taught the people in such a way that they were astonished at your teaching and said: "How does he know the Books when he has not been taught?" And David said: "Come, children, and be enlightened. Listen to me and I will teach you the fear of the Lord." You who taught wisdom to Solomon, God of all, the Word and Almighty King, open the soul of your servant (handmaid) (Name), and his (her) heart, mouth, and mind, that he (she) may understand, accept and do your will. Deliver him (her) from every plot of the devil and preserve him (her) all the days of his (her) life, that he (she) may always live successfully according to your commandments. Through the prayers of your all-pure Mother and of all your saints.

For You are the Guardian of our souls and bodies, O Christ God, and we give glory to You and also to your eternal Father and your all-holy good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for Students at the Beginning of the School Year

Priest: Let us pray to the Lord.

Response: Lord, have mercy.

O Lord our God, who have honored us with your own image, who have taught your chosen ones so that those who give heed to your teaching are most wise, You reveal wisdom to babes and impart understanding. Open the hearts, minds, and lips of these your servants, so that they might receive the power of your Law and successfully comprehend the useful precepts that shall be taught to them, for the benefit and building up of your holy Church, and so that they may understand your good and perfect Will. Deliver them from every attack of the enemy. Preserve them in the orthodoxy of your Holy Catholic Faith and in all uprightness and purity all the days of their lives, that they may advance in wisdom and in the fulfillment of your commandments, so that, being thus prepared, they may glorify your most holy Name and become heirs of your Kingdom. For You are the God of mercy, gracious in strength, and we render glory to You, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
