Pascha

Great and Holy Thursday is a day of strict fasting.

All services in Great and Holy Week are moved ahead 12 hours.

The reason is probably to make the services more convenient for the people to attend.

Matins is the Service of Forgiveness with Holy Mystery of Repentance and the Service of Anointing with Holy Oil with Holy Mystery of Holy Oil (Anointing with Holy Oil ) of Great and Holy Thursday, which is celebrated on Great and Holy Wednesday evening

  • Service of Forgiveness with the Holy Mystery of Repentance
  • Service of Anointing with Holy Oil with Holy Mystery of Holy Oil (Anointing with Holy Oil )

The Church offers us two Holy Mysteries of healing for our souls and bodies: Holy Mystery of Repentance and Holy Mystery of Holy Oil . These Holy Mysteries for the healing of soul and body are given to everyone because no one is perfect; all of us need Holy God's healing mercy and love.

Service of Forgiveness with the Holy Mystery of Repentance

  • Prayers of repentance.
  • Holy Mystery of Repentance or Forgiveness of Sin with individual confession. (A good confession should be part of our Lenten preparation for properly celebrating the Resurrectin of Christ.)

Service of Anointing with Holy Oil with Holy Mystery of Holy Oil (Anointing with Holy Oil )

On Wed., Jesus is anointed with oil as a prelude to His death so we are anointed in the service of Holy Oil.

  • Prayer Service over the oil.
  • Gospel is sung over the oil.
  • People Venerate the Gospel.
  • Holy Mystery of Holy Oil (Anointing with Holy Oil ) - Each person is annointed five times
    • Forehead
    • Palm of each hand
    • Back of each hand.
  • Priest gives holy Oil for the people to take home.

Restored and cleansed by the healing bestowed in these Holy Mysteries, we can approach the Holy Mystery of the Lord's Body and Blood on the day of His Resurrection as we should, "with fear of God, with faith and with love."

Holy Myron

The Patriarch consecrates Holy Myron (a special mixture of oil and spices) for all the Melkite Greek Catholic Churches. Holy Myron is used for annointing in the Holy Mysteries.

O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
